God Is Not Finished With You

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6

He Began It

The Book of Philippians has been called “The Joy Epistle” because the Apostle Paul is so full of joy about this church. In the very first chapter we read the encouraging words of Paul who assured the Philippians, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil 1:6). First of all, it was God Who began this work in you.

He Will Carry It

Next we see that God began a good work in us but He is bringing it to completion, and although we’re not there yet, He is carrying us through to the completion of the work of His hands. We are in fact His workmanship (Eph 2:10), and He’s not going to quit in the middle of His project. That’s good news, isn’t it? Sometimes, I must admit, I look like I am “under construction,” but that’s okay, God’s going to complete it.

He Will Complete it

As we have read, God began a good work in us by His Spirit, and then He continues His work in us in order to bring us to the day of completion. That day will only come at the appearance of Jesus Christ, or if we pass into glory first. Either way, He finishes what He started. God’s going to complete the good work He began in us so that we continue the good work in the eternal kingdom of heaven, or the New Jerusalem (Rev 21:1-2).

Conclusion

As long as you are drawing breath, God is not finished with you. Even if you are bedridden, God can use you. You can pray for others, which may be the most significant thing you can do anyway, so He can work in you and through you. You just have to trust Him to finish the job, because He began it, He continues in it, and He will complete it. That should encourage you that God “will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil 1:6), what He began in you on the day you were born again.
