God's Word

“For the word of God is living and active.” – Hebrews 4:12

The Word Cuts

The author of Hebrews writes that “the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12) but it cuts in order to heal. When wounds are treated, often the old, dead or decaying tissue has to be cut away and that speeds healing. Even the surgeon cuts in order to heal or save lives.

The Word Reveals

The Word of God also says that there is “no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Heb 4:13). The word reveals our heart to ourselves and shows us our sins and it also warns us that every one of us will have to give an account someday for every single deed, idle word, or thought.

The Word Pierces

Since the Word of God is described as a sword, it pierces all the way down to the heart. The sword passes through everything in us, down to the bone and marrow and into the heart where it discerns our thoughts, intentions, and motives. When I read the Bible I find that it reads me; right down to my DNA. The Word of God convicts, convinces, and converts (Psalm 19:1).

The Word Brings Life

When most of Jesus’ disciples left Him, Jesus asked if they would leave too but “Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). When most left Jesus, most left the living Word of God, Jesus Christ (John 1:1, 14) and their only chance to be saved (Acts 4:12).

Conclusion

As a pastor, I believe the Word is double-edged for a good reason; it cuts those who hear it but also to those who speak it. It cuts both the hearers and those who preach it but the Word cuts in order to heal. The Word of God can bring eternal life by the hearing and the reading of the Word and the power of God that’s found in the gospel (Rom 1:16; 1st Cor 1:18).
