How can Christians glorify God in their everyday life? Here’s a few ideas.
Your Time
How can Christians glorify God in their everyday life? Here are a few ideas. For one thing, you have three invaluable things you possess. Your time, your talents, and your treasures and all three can glorify God. Let me ask you this question: “What do you have that you can give away that costs you nothing?” the answer is, “Your time.” Our church provides a church service for a local nursing home and it costs us nothing but our time, but this fulfills what James said is “pure religion” as he wrote, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1:27). Anyone can act religious or talk religious, but true religion is doing; visiting the orphans and the widows, and guess how many at a nursing home are widows and orphans? Almost all of them! I believe 90% of serving is just showing up.
Your Talents
Your time costs you only one thing; it takes away from your own time from doing the things that you want to do, but so does your talent. Every person in the church has been gifted by the Holy Spirit and everyone has some God-given talent from the Spirit that can benefit others. Our music worship leader and Elder has a great gift for singing and playing guitar, along with members of his family, so his talents and gifts benefit the church and not only during services. His time and talents are used for God’s glory.
Your Treasure
Last, but not least, it is the giving of your treasure that can glorify God. This means the money and possessions that God has blessed you with. You can use these to help others. Even that is in your best interest because Jesus says we are to “give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). By giving to others, you will “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matt 6:20), but this will also bring glory to God. To not give is to rob oneself of blessings. He already owns it all so why not give back at least a portion of what He already owns but is blessing you with? You must realize He has already been generous to you and your family. Count your blessings and yes, name them one by one!
A New Heaven and Earth
When the Apostle John wrote that he “saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more” (Rev 21:1), he then “saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Rev 21:2). The church is the Bride and Christ is the Bridegroom. Today, He is looking for those who will be His hands, feet, ears, eyes, and voice to do what He would do if He were physically present on the earth. He wants the church to submit to Him, as it should, and what to do? He says to feed the hungry and poor, refresh the thirst, welcome the stranger, cloth the naked (poor), visit the sick, and go to those in prison (Matt 25:35-36). We do this for His glory while actually doing it to Him (Matt 25:40).
God with Us
The Bible says that Immanuel is another name for Jesus Christ and means “God with us,” and as He was with the disciples, He is with us in the literal sense today. God promises that He is in us today, but someday, will actually be with us as “the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God” (Rev 21:3). This means that someday God will dwell with us and we will “see His face” (Rev 21:4). That will make any spirit soar and give praise and glory to God! The Bible says whoever praises Him brings Him glory (Psalm 50:23). Today, we may be the only glimpse that the sinner ever sees of Jesus or the only Bible ever lived out before their eyes. Just how closely will we resemble Jesus Christ determines whether or not we bring Him glorify and draw people to Christ or that we’re really no different from the world, thus losing a golden opportunity to bring glory to God and share the Gospel. If we’re no different from the world, why would they want to know Christ better?
The Image of God
In the beginning, God created mankind in the image of God (Gen 1:27), but our image has been marred by sin. We are fallen creatures, but someday, we will receive new bodies that are incorruptible and “Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven” (1 Cor 15:49). Now that I’m well nearing 70, I am not sure how much longer my body will go on…but, someday, “the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality” (1 Cor 15:54), and that should make your spirit soar today! That knowledge ought to compel us to live a joyful life before others…a life that brings glory to God.
Created for His Glory
Did you know that you were no accident? I’ve heard people say that their birth were accidents, but don’t believe it. Nothing is by chance or accident. I’m the one having accidents but God, never! If you are reading this, then know that God planned your birth even before anything existed (Eph 1:4-5). God declares through Isaiah the Prophet that “everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made” (Isaiah 43:7). We were created for His glory and created to glorify Him. That’s our purpose.
Created for Good Works
We know we’re not saved by works because our works are nothing more than filthy rags to God (Isaiah 64:6), but our good works should bring glory to God and will be the fruit we bear via the Holy Spirit. Scripture teaches us that “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph 2:10). Amazing, isn’t it? God prepared these works for us to walk in before we even existed. Try to wrap your mind around that.
Created for Salvation
God’s Word declares that He “chose us in him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless before him” (Eph 1:4) and “in love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will” (Eph 1:5). Make no mistake; there was nothing of redeeming value in us that made us worthy to be saved. It was only because of His great love that “we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Eph 1:11). The only thing we contributed was our sin which needed to be removed.
Created with Purpose
God never does anything without having a purpose. There are no “accidents” with God. Every single thing that God does has a very specific purpose, and your being created is no different. Since God created you, you have a purpose. He was deliberate in planning you from before the foundation of the earth was created (Eph 1:4). This was no random act of kindness, but a thoughtful process of planning and execution.
Conclusion
When someone has an accident at a family gathering, I joke, “Hey, if someone’s going to have an accident, it’s me” because I do have two left feet. My son is more coordinated than I am so my girls (my wife and daughter) have all of the grace in our family…but that doesn’t matter to God. You and I were no accident. You and I were deliberately planned before time existed and for one sole purpose; to bring glory to God. Don’t ever think you have no purpose in life. That’s not possible because God never does anything without purpose. The Word of God tells us so. Never put feelings over facts, and the fact is you were no accident. God had great purpose in creating you and chiefly among that is to glory God and enjoy Him forever.
If you have never trusted in Jesus Christ, then you will not ever fulfill the purposes of God but face the eternal wrath of God (Dan 12:1-3; Rev 20:12-15). Make today your day of salvation while it is still the “favorable time” (2 Cor 6:2) before death, when judgement comes (Heb 9:27) or at His appearance (Rev 1:7), whichever comes first.
