The Tongue ...

Woman writing

The tongue can do much good or it can bring much harm, so here are the top 13 Bible verses about the tongue and the power of words.

The following Top 13 Bible verses about the tongue are some of many that address how powerful our words are and our responsibility for the words we speak. It’s important to learn to control our tongue and be careful about what we say.

13 The path of life leads upward for the prudent, that he may turn away from Sheol beneath. - Proverbs 15:24 12 With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone. - Proverbs 25:15 11 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. - Proverbs 31:26 10 The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway. - Proverbs 15:19 9 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. - Proverbs 12:18

8 Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with his tongue. - Proverbs 28:23

7 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. - Proverbs 10:20

6 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off. - Proverbs 10:31

5 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride.

For the cursing and lies they utter - Psalm 59:12

4 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by

mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. - James 3:7-9

3 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s

religion is worthless. - James 1:26

2 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by

such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our

members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. - James 3:5-6

1 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing,

I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. - Matthew 12:36-37

The Untamable Tongue – James 3

The bad thing about misusing the tongue is that we can’t take words back that we’ve spoken in anger. We can apologize, but once they’re out of our mouth, those nasty words are stuck in their mind. Whatever damage is to be done, will be done. Small wonder then that James said that “no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8).

Death and Life – Proverbs 18

Words can build up, and words can tear down, so how many of our words build up rather than tear down? Or do they tear down more than they build up? Some people are broken by words, and in a few cases, words caused someone to take their own life, so the Proverb is true: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” (Proverbs 18:21).

Worthless Religion – Matthew 15

Talk is cheap, and if it’s not backed up by actions, our words are worthless. We might profess Christ, but our language often betrays what’s in our heart. Jesus said “the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man” (Matthew 15:18), so “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless” (James 1:26).

Separated by Sin – Proverbs 21

There are times when it’s better to say nothing at all than to say something you’ll regret. I’ve done it many times. If only I had taken to heart Solomon’s advice that “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble” (Proverbs 21:23). Sometimes, it’s better to say nothing at all, or at least wait until something better comes out of our mouth.

Corrupt Talk – Ephesians 4

I’ve been a Christian long enough to not be shocked by what comes out of some people’s mouth. Even believers have surprised themselves by what they said, and so the Apostle Paul’s admonition is even more important in putting our tongue in check. He wrote, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). If it builds up, it’s good. If it’s fitting for the occasion, then it’s good; because it gives “grace to those who hear.”

Final Thoughts…

The tongue is one of the smallest members in the body, but it’s one of the deadliest. It does have the power of life and death….the power to tear down or to build up…the power to give grace or provoke to anger, so for us, taming the tongue means being slow to anger, praying about our response, and keeping silent until things have cooled down.

Noise or demonstration

There are numbers of good people who think that a preacher or meeting does not amount to much unless there is more or less noise and emotion. With this class, it seems that their emotional nature is more highly developed than their piety in the home life.

This is one reason why some people are opposed to shouting; they hear those shout, who afterwards find fault around home, leave bills unpaid, drive close bargains, and do various other things that are inconsistent with a loud profession.

Brother, sister, remember a big shout in meeting will never atone for an unsanctified tongue around home. Understand, we are not opposed to demonstrations and freedom of the Spirit. No! Let us have more of it. But we are opposed to making this the test and standard of deep spirituality.

The fact is, experience proves that the justified life has more outbursts of emotion than the entirely sanctified life, but the latter has a depth of uninterrupted peace and soul rest not to be found in the former state. Hence it is wrong to think that he who has lots of gush, blubber, and “hurrah boys” is more spiritual than others.
